Occupational Health and Safety

Our Commitment

At Strata Heritage, the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees, contractors, clients, Traditional Owners, community participants and visitors is fundamental to everything we do.

We are committed to providing and maintaining a safe and healthy working environment across all our activities, including office-based work, archaeological investigations, cultural heritage assessments, and fieldwork throughout Victoria. Based in Gippsland and working across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria, Strata Heritage regularly operate in remote and regional environments where robust safety systems and proactive risk management are essential. Our objective is to prevent injury and illness, minimise workplace risks, and continually improve our safety performance.

Our Approach to Safety

Safety is integrated into all stages of our projects. We identify potential hazards, assess risks, and implement appropriate controls before work begins and throughout project delivery.

Our Occupational Health and Safety Management System supports:

  • Risk assessment and hazard management
  • Safe work procedures for field and office activities
  • Employee consultation and participation
  • Ongoing training and competency development
  • Incident reporting and investigation
  • Emergency preparedness and response
  • Continuous improvement and review

Fieldwork and Cultural Heritage Activities

As a heritage consultancy, many of our projects involve archaeological investigations, cultural heritage assessments, and work in remote or regional environments. We apply specialised safety procedures for activities such as:

  • Archaeological excavation and survey work
  • Remote and isolated fieldwork
  • Extreme weather and heat management
  • Vehicle and equipment use
  • Fatigue management
  • Site-specific hazard assessment

Before commencing field activities, risk assessments are undertaken and daily safety briefings delivered to ensure work can be performed safely and responsibly.

Cultural Safety and Respect

Strata Heritage recognises that health, safety and wellbeing extend beyond physical safety. We are committed to culturally respectful engagement with Traditional Owners, Registered Aboriginal Parties, community representatives and stakeholders involved in our projects.

We strive to create safe, respectful and inclusive environments that support collaboration, cultural awareness and responsible heritage management.

Legislative Requirements

Strata Heritage operates in accordance with applicable occupational health and safety legislation, regulations and industry requirements, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (Vic) and associated regulations.

We expect all employees, contractors and subcontractors engaged on our projects to comply with relevant safety requirements and to actively contribute to a positive safety culture.

Continuous Improvement

We regularly review our safety systems, procedures and performance to ensure they remain effective and aligned with industry best practice.
